Mine not only knows words, he has learned to recognize words when we spell them. Certain words like "walk" or "cookie" (dog treat) we try to spell out if we're not sure whether we're going to take him on a walk or give him a cookie and half the time he starts getting excited, jumping and running back and forth, just like he does when we say the words.
We can be having a conversation about something else and then start talking about him, without even mentioning his name, and he will act all alert and look at us even though a minute before he was asleep and not paying attention to what we were saying.

Broke into the freezer pulled out the bottom drawers & ate the contents.
Swapped the doors around.
1 day later had sussed this out.
Had to put heavy weights in front of door.
Christmas left overs in a low oven, pulled down the door ate the lot.
2 Beagles, not sure which was the smarter.
They always amazed me with their ability to get at food.

My dogs are really smart!
They prove this by convincing me to buy them the best food, the best treats, to save them some of my dinner every night, to make them the most comfy beds, build them a big yard, be sure they have their best friend to play with, to take them for walks at the river and beach, take care of all their medical and dental needs...so they can laze around all day while I go to work to pay the bills!
I want to be one of my dogs!

My Bichonpoo is only 4 months but has proven over and over how smart she is. She learned to go on her wee wee pads in just a couple days with no accidents, she learned "no bite" and "switch" so that I don't have a problem with her biting and chewing. She knows "no quiet" so she doesn't bark. Anything I teach her she learns quickly.

Mine is also good at toy recognition. He also learned to use one of those doggie pillows - he sleeps with his head on it just like a person. The best is bath time, which although he's not crazy about, he'll get in and out of the tub himself, he'll turn around, stand, sit, all when I tell him too, doesn't shake until we get outside. He's the best!!

Our dog is smart. When we tell him to go get a certain toy like the rope, or mr. squeaky he can go get the one you have asked him to get. He also knows when someone is coming over. Like when I am on the phone with someone who is about to come over, he listens to me talk and then goes to the door and waits till that person comes over.

I had a border collie. He used to meet me at the door and when I asked "Where's Mom?" he would take me to her, looking back to make sure I was following. He knew words and what they meant. He knew when an epileptic seizure was coming on and forced my mom to sit down for it.
