Why are there so many people that cannot spell correctly? Is it because of an increase in dyslexia, laziness or stupidity? I know it's been awhile since I was in high school but is spelling and grammar still taught in school?

I don't think dyslexia is increasing, I think laziness is. And as a society we are allowing it.

I often comment on spelling on grammar - there is no word pregnate, does is spelled does not doz. I look at questions like that many times, and they maybe valid questions, but I don't answer them because I can't take the asker seriously.

Maybe I am being snobbish, but people are too lazy to click on Check spelling, their grammar is awful, they make-up words, the questions don't make sense and then they expect people to answer. When I see questions that are that poorly written I wonder if the person is literate enough to understand a good answer.

I used to answer more of these questions, but I think my tolerance has gone down since i start answering questions here.

Besides the awful grammar and spelling, people make up blatant lies, they ask disgusting questions, or they go out of their way to be obnoxious. I know most of the people here are younger and many of the questions are from people that are not that mature but this is a public forum.

I also get aggravated by people who do homework. Kids will not learn when someone else does their work.

I don't think it's dyslexia, I think's too much time spent watching TV and trying to find a way around the school's computer network blocks on myspace, etc. So I guess that would be laxiness and/or stupidity. If spelling and grammar are taught in school, most of the students must be asleep or gone.

In Kentucky there is the "Kentucky Education Reform Act." It apparently was put into effect some decade ago. In the process, teaching grammar was abandonned. Spelling is not often made much of either. Creative writing is NOT corrected for spelling "so that the little darlings don't get their feelings hurt."

Now, the teachers are busy doing paper work for the school district and care must be taken not to offend any minority. There is a zero tolerance for any gang/weapon/drug mention on school property so that all and sundry are consumed with school safety (thankfully I might add), and the child who is messed up is put into another facility. All of this stuff makes the act of actually 'teaching' take up only one third of the school day. Am I exaggerating. I wish I were.

I think that dyslexia, stupidity and laziness has incresed in the population. Spelling and grammar are still taught in school but I don't think it does much.
