Wrong Spence,it was Jamie Gold who won the Main Event of the 2006 WSOP, and Jeff Madsen was the Player of the Year.

Madsen won PotY. Gold won the WSOP main event and to my knowledge, Mike Mizrachi is still the top ranked player in the world.
