It isn't from the blood being cut off. It is from your nerves being compressed to that area.
When you sit on your foot, you temporarily compress, or squash, the nerves in that area. These nerves can't send messages back to the brain normally, and so for the moment, the connection is cut off and you don't feel anything. It's kind of like a phone call where your friend hangs up and you haven't yet: Your brain is saying "hello," but your foot isn't able to answer.
After you stand up or uncross your legs and the nerves are no longer compressed, the feeling in your foot soon comes back. It might feel a bit tingly as this happens, like pins and needles or even a bit painful. But it only lasts a few seconds as the connection returns to normal, and it won't hurt your body

You have cut off the circulation to some part of your body by leaning on it too long. The part without blood supply is not capable of moving or sensing at that point so it feels like it "fell asleep."
Get into a better position and it will be perfect again.

Normally, the nerves and/or blood vesels are being pinched or depressed, cause a lakc of flow to the extremidies. Releave the pressure and they "wake up". There are more serious problems though. Many people have bad circulation due to clots, irregular heart beats, and other heath problems that can cause this. In these instences, medical treatment is required asap.

You are cutting off or compressing the nerves and blood vessels leading to your foot. Normally it's not a problem but it can hurt as ciruclation is resotred. If you do it for a while you can stop the blood to the point where you get potentially fatal clots.
