When it comes, he gets hot so fast and he can hardly move. But it lasts only maybe 15 minutes then he's back to normal. It happened twice on Friday, not at all Saturday and once today (sunday). After the fever is gone, there is a tiny bruise on one of his cheeks.

Any ideas about what it could be? Should I take him to the doctor, or wait it out?

Sounds viral. Viral infections have a fever that turns up, goes away and comes back because the virus infects a cell, bursts (get a fever) and then starts incubating itself into new cells (fever goes away since the virus is replicating) and then bursts so you get a fever again.

You need to go to the doctor and get some meds.

What do you mean by "he can hardly move?"

I'll say this. Two months ago, my daughter got a fever very fast...it rapidly increased within a few minutes and caused her to have a febrile seizure. It's caused by a rapid increase in temperature in a short period of time. It isn't necessarily caused by how high the fever goes, but by fast it escelates. I've researched it after this and I've also spoken to a few doctors and they said the body does this because it sort of goes into "shock" by the increase in body temperature. It can be dangerous if they don't have a good oxygen supply or it lasts long, but it helps by breaking the fever. Thing is, not all children have the classical seizure. Sometimes, they just stop moving for a few minutes and stare off into space...and that's it. It would cause the fever to drop rapidly on a typical basis. As for the bruise, that sounds like something more than a fever to me.

I would definitely take him to a doctor...even if he is doing well in the morning. The doctor may want to run tests or know what it is already and just be able to tell you over the phone. Definitely call because it's better safe than sorry.

One last thing...if you mean he can hardly move, like he is kind of lagging behind, it may be due to the fever itself. Whenever I get a fever, I get incredibly sore all over. I just ache and want to lay in bed. When it breaks, I'm fine! But if his temperature is increases and dropping like that, I think it is something more. Most people do not have fevers like that. The body usually keeps the fever until it can fight off the infection.

Hope he gets better soon!

Because there are other weird symptoms surrounding these fevers then I wouldn't waist any time in getting him to the doctor. Those bruises and how fast the fever hits is a worry.

I was once told by a doctor that its better to bring a child in if your worried even if its just for piece of mind. You will feel better knowing that you have seen the doctor.

Definitly call the doctor to get him checked. They always say if your child is running fever for more than 24 hours, get it checked. Especially with the bruising, have no idea what that could be. Please ask the doctor...
