The first fighting was done when Japan first attacked China.

In Europe, the first fighting was when Germany invaded Poland.
England was bound by treaty to defend Poland, so they declared war on Germany

For the United States, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The next day, President Roosevelt asked Congress for a Declaration of War with Japan. Shortly thereafter, Hitler declared war on the US. Not a real smart move on his part.

World War II is generally attributed to things stemming from World War I. Things like the retributions clause in the peace agreements, especially those asked for by France, caused an enormous debt to Germany which it had no hope of paying off.

Hitler would come to power in this environment, but remember that nothing in history happens in a vaccuum, and that he was ELECTED originally to the Weimar Republic. From there, he would try to regain all that Germany had lost after World War I, including territory, and the Allies, like France and England, would appease him. Neville Chamberlain is pretty famous for this.

Hitler was an evil man, but around the same time we have Stalin causing a lot of problems in the Soviet Union, especially Ukraine, and he would become Hitler's ally at the beginning of the war. They would eventually turn against one another.

Nationalism and expansionism can also be blamed, such as the case of smaller nation states, but these tensions can be traced back to the beginning of World War I.

A good question to ask is what started World War I, instead of WHO started World War II. Not any single person, nation, or idea started the second World War.

Britain and France had guaranteed the integrity of Poland. Hitler assumed they would do nothing when he invaded but both countries declared war after demanding that Germany withdraw from Poland, needless to say Germany didn't. America didn't get involved on a war footing until attacked by Japan in December 7th, 1941 but assisted the Allies by selling them war supplies.
