I prefer the "California" rolls. I know you can find them in grocery stores, but the one's I have tried don't sell them in the sealed packages which is what I am looking for.

I have bought then from Stater Bro's and Albertsons. Vons and Ralphs also carry them. You get 6 to a package and they are delicious. They are usually located in the meat section near the fish. Ask someone who works there and they will show you.

If you want to make them yourself, it is not difficult.

You need short grain rice (or sushi rice) made per the packages directions.

When it is done, add a splash of rice vinegar (just a little) and a little sugar and salt. Mix it up well and let the rice cool. You can do this faster by spreading it out on some wax paper.

To prepare the filling for California rolls, thinly slice some cucumber, avocado and carrots. Take a small amount of imitation crab meat and mince it finely. Add a little mayonnaise (or plain yogurt) and pepper to it and mix it well.

You will need seaweed wraps, which you can buy from any mainstream grocery store or an Asian foods store.

To wrap the rolls, it is easiest to put the seaweed sheet down first, followed by a thin layer or rice covering it except for a small 1/2 inch section on the side furthest from you.

Put the crab meat down in a thin row (lengthwise) and add a few slices of your vegi's along the row.

Roll the whole thing up starting with the end closest to you and seal the seam with a little water. Then slice and enjoy.

If you prefer the rice to be on the outside, spread it on some wax paper so you can roll it easily, then put the seaweed sheet down and follow the steps for the previous section. I hope this helps.

Around in New England just about every supermarket sells. them. Most have a sushi chef on contract who comes in and prepares the sushi packages on the premises from food items in the stores. He then goes to another store in the chain and does their's etc.

It is not that the stores want to give you a great experience. They are just worried about bringing in items that are prepared from raw foods in a way that they can not tell whether it was left out unrefrigerated in the truck or something dangerous like that. With it made in the store they have no worry and no liability.

I'm not sure what you mean by the sealed packages, but Safeway here in AZ has great fresh made in the store sushi that they package. Their California rolls come in six to a package and they are fantastic.

If you're lucky enough to live near a T & T store, you can buy the most magnificent fresh sushi you've ever tasted. If not, try checking out some of the oriental food store, or deli's.
Or try making it yourself. It isn't that difficult. Cook rice with a slosh of vinegar, when it's done, add your favorite filling -- anything from raw salmon to avocado slices, roll in a seaweed wrapper and garnish with thinly sliced ginger. If you're a glutton for punishment you can even eat the wasabi mustard.

Sushi is made daily at stores. They have it at wild oats and the chef runs a part of plastic around it. You can have the chef make you something special and you do not have to worry that someone has messed with it. Some restaurants will have to go sushi, but you have to eat it right away.

Wegman's has good sushi that is prepared right before your eyes, and I've had their California rolls, and they are pretty tasty...unfortunately, if you are in a different area than the Northeast, I think Wegman's might not exist for you...?

i would never buy already made sushi..
go to a sushi place and order it to take out. i do that all the time for lunch. i get it to go and bring it home and watch my soap. but already made, you have no idea how old it is, how long it has been sitting there. and the rice gets dry....

If you have a Meijer's store in your area, they have already prepared sushi in the deli section. I won't vouch for how good it is, but they do have it.
