I think it is totally acceptable. even if your were to never upgrade.... it is the meaning behind the ring that makes it special anyways.

Whatever you can afford should be acceptable. You shouldnt have to go out and "upgrade" the ring later. Love shouldnt have to be what you can and cant afford in the relationship.

as long as its not gaudy and the lady likes the new ring --- why not??
