If people put them into the mailbox, they end up in the Dead Letter Office of the post office. Sometimes, charities or individuals sift through the Santa letters, pick out some which seem to express real need, and fulfill some of the wishes expressed therein.

they probably put them under the tree, next to the cookies and milk.
and if santa never comes, its put into the bottom of their hearts
along with their tears.

They go to schools and students actually answer the letters as an assignment... I know because I had to do it :)
