I am American and want to go work in Australia to join up with some mates of mine from England who are already there on year long working visas. They can get visas easy because they are common wealth citizens. What choices do Americans have for visas?

Americans can only get a 4-month general open work visa but there is a potential to renew for another 4-months or find a company willing to sponsor you for longer. The programs detailed above will only work for an American if you can get big points for skills and this is often weighted on an advanced degree or many years working in that exact capacity. If you are 30 or under (no need to be a student), get an open 4-month work visa without a lot of hassle and paperwork through:

hahaha yeah, what he said. It's just as easy for an american to gain a work visa than it is for someone from the UK. Just as long as you can prove you'll be a productive lil trooper you'll have no problems. Also, it doesn't necessarily mean you can only persue work relating to your stated skills. You may be a professional widget engineer, but find work in a pub, or picking fruit etc.

Hope you have a great stay, bring a friend!

G'day s hoot,

Thank you for your question.

Generally yes, especially if you have a valuable skill or a job lined up. I would speak with your mates about finding you something.

Australia has distinct skills shortages especially in the resource boom states of Queensland or WA or in Canberra where I live. I would speak with the Australian embassy in Washington. If you are a skilled tradesman or in IT, you would definitely be welcomed with open arms.

I also enclose some information about working visas in Australia for your reference. You might want to sign up with the skills matching database that may help you to find a job.

Regards

As others have said you can also get a working visa (12 months). Just read the relevant information on the Department of Immigration's site that relates to Working Visas http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/index.htm
