Conures can hold a grudge for a LOOONNNNGGG time. Just be patient, and keep trying. Eventually it will get over itself, and get on with life. I had a green-cheek once, had the sweetest disposition. But I clipped her wings, and every time I did, she wouldn't let me near her for almost a week. Then she'd be fine again. Also, conures are very much a one-person bird, so she may still be heavily attached to her previous owners. Again, give her time. Maybe offering juicy treats (mine loved dried chili peppers, grapes and apples) will help her to learn to love you.

First off let me tell you this, I have a Sun Conure, and they surek now how to hold a grudge! If whenever I leave the house and don't say buhbye to him, he won't let me hold him for DAYS! I will give you some tips from my experiences:
1. Treats, find out what his favorite treat(s) are. Sit by his cage and with the door open, when he comes near you, give him a treat, but try not to invade too much of his space ie, sticking your hand IN his cage. He will then see that it is rewarding to just hang out with you.
2. Someone mentioned earlier reading, and this is always good, but not as helpful. This bird is most likely mean because he felt abondoned. You need to put him in a place where you will be often. Mine is in my bedroom and sees me all the time. These birds need to feel secure, and seeing you is the best way to do that.
3. When he bites, and he will continue to do so even when he trusts you, I've had mine since May, and I would say he has a lot of trust in me, but Conures are notorious for biting if they don't like what you're doing. I can't type on a computer with him on me, he doesn't like the clicking noise, and will crawl down my arm and bite my hands LOL. Anyhow, when he does bite you, try not to freak out and scream, they pack a hell of a punch, and it took me a while to get used to it, I have several scars all over my hands! When he bites though, say no sternly but not yelling(birds love dramatic scenes, and find them entertaining, and will then bite for their entertainment) and calmly walk him to his cage put him in and cover him up for 5 minutes for a "time out". In doing this you will condition him to recognize that biting is bad and he gets time out when he does so.

Those are just a few pointers, I hope they help, just remember being persistant and always carry through with the same actions so that they learn! Good luck!

There is no such thing as a "mean bird". No parrot is inherently mean. They are undomesticated (wild) prey animals genetically identical to their counterparts in nature. They are highly intelligent and complex creatures. Please take what I have said into consideration when you interact with your new pet.

You need to get the bird to trust you: put another way, this means you need to EARN this bird's trust. Let the conure set the pace: do NOT force it to do anything it doesn't want to do. Forcing birds to do anything DESTROYS trust: it will backfire on you in a huge way. Talk softly to the bird, offer him his favourite treats and don't put any pressure or stress on him. He's already felt the stress of abandonment by his previous owners: TWICE. He'll come around when he's good and ready: not a moment before.

Parrot behaviour can be very complex. I suggest you take your bird in for a full check up at your nearest avian vet. If you don't have a vet, you can find one at

Have fun with your new companion!
