Yes, you can cook the pasta in the microwave:
Microwaving small macaroni (elbow, rotelle, ziti, shells, etc...)
1 cup water
¼ tsp. salt
¼. vegetable oil
Pour water into 1½-quart microwave sage casserole. Cook 2:30 minutes at 100% power until water boils. Add salt and oil to water and stir.
add 2 oz. macaroni by spreading out macaroni in the casserole dish of water. Cook 12 minutes at 50% power or until water is absorbed.
Then, when you put the cheese sauce on the pasta - the hot pasta should heat it up enough to eat.

Wow, I see these answers are 10 years old and a lot has changed since then. Anyway, yes you can cook it in the microwave, I just did it and it was perfect. I emptied 1 pack of shells in a microwave safe bowl, added 2-2 1/2 cups of water, heated it on high for 10-12 minutes (depending on wattage), checked tenderness, then added salt and cheese and stirred til distributed evenly. It was delish!

Not in my experience. The shells need to be cooked separately in boiling water with a dash of salt for 7-10 minutes. Then you can add the cheese to the shells and melt that in the microwave. If you don't have the ability to boil water where you are (I had a microwave in Iraq but no way to boil water) then maybe nachos will be an optio
Good luck.

If there are no microwave directions on the box then probably not. I know that there is a mac and cheese made specifically for the microwave though. I just found this maybe this will help you:
