I have the same problem... My 5 year old son.. though a true sweetheart he just can't seem to listen half the time.. i also do not believe in hitting or spanking a child.. I like to do the 3 count.. for the most part it works Just say to him.. I am going to count to three When i get to 3 you better be ready to do as asked or whatnot.. or no cartoons.. no game or no something else he or she really is fond o.. i try not to use food.. Good luck though.. mine will generally play the 3 count but.. not at all times.. but at least he gets that he has a choice to make or there are consequences for not complying

What is the benefit of listening to you? What are the rewards your child gets for being good?
Maybe instead of trying bigger, badder punishments, you could try rewarding him for obeying you.
Before you try this, you want to tell him that you will reward him for a certain good behavior. You pick one thing to work on, let's say picking up his toys before bed. You say, " Son, we need to get these toys put in the toy box. I am going to set the buzzer for 5 mins. If you can get them all picked up before the buzzer goes off, I'm going to give you a reward." It can be a sticker, a piece of candy ( I used chocolate chips), a stamp on his hand, etc. Whatever it is, you have to give the reward right away, not tomorrow, not next week! Then, move on to another area ( like getting in the bath tub) and do the same thing.
Be consistant! Everytime he does the right thing that you are working on, you must give him the reward or else it is not going to work.
Giving him small chores, like setting the table, shaking out the rugs, putting the toilet paper on the roll, and praising him him greatly for performing them with you & for you will help him to want to listen. Tell him, " You are such a big helper!" "My! What a great job you did!"
This is a lot of work for you, but it is a lot easier than yelling all the time and it will build a better relationship between you & your son.

Take away his toys for a LONG time. Just taking them for an afternoon isn't going to do a thing. Try two days for first offense, four days, a week, etc. the more he misbehaves. He'll eventually catch on that IT PAYS TO LISTEN.

Show your 5 your old that you are a listener as well and not doing all the talking in the conversation. When they see that you are a listener and not doing all the talking. Then they will see that they need to listen as well.
Yelling will never help.
It always makes things worse.

Talk to him/her in a calm voice, because yelling definately does not work. And try to spend some time with them and try to be on the same level they are on.

find a mode of discipline and STICK WITH IT. A 5 year old doesn't THINK like an adult. They don't have the mentallity to actually remember what you said last week about something. When a 5 year old doesn't listen they are acting like a 5 year old. Maybe YOU need to stop expecting your 5 year old to act like an adult?

you havta raise your voice and really make his senses automatic when you want him to listen. Take away tv time. make a deal with him ... even hes just a little kid because nothing else seems to be working.
