Is it for packagaing, to prevent damage to the peaches in transit or to keep the peaches from spoiling?

I don't like that yucky stuff, and I think the canning companies can save a lot of money by leaving it out.

Well I think it helps preserve the fruit. But also, I'm sure some people love that part, and it also adds flavor to different recipes. So, if you don't like it you could strain it out, versus if they didn't put it, people who like it would be disappointed with the product. And I really doubt it would save the companies any money, because then they'd need to add more peaches to each can.

The manufacturer puts a thick syrup in these cans because sugar is a preservative, so bactaria cannot exist.

You could buy canned peaches in natural pear juice....read the ingredient list...It should say, peaches in pear juice.
You could buy frozen peaches....they usually come without sugar added...

The sweet yuky syrup is for people who like sweet yuky syrup. Try buying the canned peaches with out the syurp. They make the "light" canned peaches. You can also try buying fresh peaches.

The syrup is cheaper than the peaches. It does preserve them. Buy frozen peaches instead.

On the few occasions that I buy canned peaches, I buy the ones in pear juice. They're much yummier than the ones in syrup.
