The way I understand your question is that you have an informal agreement with a birthmother to place her child for adoption with you. If this is the case, believe it or not, the hard part is over. Some prospective adoptive families wait for years to get a phone call.

If I were in your shoes I would get on the telephone right now and retain an adoption attorney. I do not know if you need an adoption agency or not. The main thing an agency does is match birthmothers with adoptive families, but this part is done.

Find an attorney who specializes in adoption, not just any attorney. What I can tell you is that laws vary from state to state. I am assuming you will need to be approved by a state governmental agency, this might take months.

Find an adoption attorney TODAY, I am not kidding about this, and explain your situation. I am sure the attorney can guide you through everything you need to do.

Maybe you can search adoption.com for an attorney in your area. Maybe you can consult the Bar Association for an adoption attorney in your area.

Good Luck!

I'm not from WV, but I adopted my son when he was 5 days old. Contact an adoption agency, your state dept of child & family services, or whomever you wish to adopt through. Ask them what their requirements are. You can plan on being fingerprinted and having a local background check done. You'll probably have to submit personal references and have a physical exam by your doctor. You'll need to show that you are financially stable and that you have a safe home environment for the child to be in. Good Luck!

you have to pick and agency first. it's not up to you when you get the child. some people wait for years on a list before they get a child and it's expensive.
