Because they recommend that you get a cat scan to look for signs os abnormal brain swelling and or hemorages that may occur should you become concussed. It can take up to 24 hours for these problems to be fully developed so the prefer you go stright to the hosptal and have it checked out there where should you need to sleep you can be immediately rushed to surgery to either relieve the swelling if necessary or drain the blood if necessary. Some problems go away on their own. Other do not. And in some cases problems appear even after the 24 hours sometimes as late as 73 hours, for example blindness can set in if the pressure continues to build near the optic nerve and or deafness. You never know what will happen until time has passed. So by all means stop hitting yourself in the head. I know it is tempting to keep bashing yourself up side your melon but stop it.

Because if you hit it hard enough to have a concussion, your brain could swell. If you go to sleep, you might not be able to wake up. If you are kept awake, whomever is with you can watch for symptoms. My fit and trim Brother in law fell on ice in the middle of the night about four years ago. He was apparently unconcious for a while, but finally made it back into the house. He was allowed to sleep a lot the next day and they ended up having to take him to the hospital. His brain swelled causing damage. He has no sense of smell or taste, he has little short-term memory, he has vertigo and cannot drive or work, and the steroids they gave him to keep his brain from swelling too much had the side-effect of killing his hips - he has had both hips replaced and he is only 46. Never take a hard blow to the head of any kind lightly! We learned the hard way.

When going to sleep the inter-cranial pressure increases. Similar to what happens when you have a concusion. The extra pressure can cause more damage or a brain bleed. Don't do it. Also if someone has hit their head that hard I am concerned they should be seen by a medical doctor.

because a head injury may have caused a concusion which has symptoms of falling asleep. It can lead to a coma. If the person is falling asleep after a head injury, they need medical attention.

because no one will notice if you pass out from a head injury or if you are just sleeping. You need to catch a head injury right away.

They might suffer from a concussion.
Concussion is classified into five grades
1. The mildest, grade I, involves only confusion.
2. Grade II involves anterograde amnesia that lasts less than five minutes as well as confusion.
3. Grade III involves the symptoms above, as well as retrograde amnesia and unconsciousness for less than five minutes.
4. Grade IV involves all of the above symptoms, as well as unconsciousness that lasts between 5 and 10 minutes.
5. Grade V is the same as grade IV, with unconsciousness lasting longer than ten minutes.
Each grade comes with different recommendations for patients who play sports:
* In grade I, the patient may return to contact sports in 20 minutes.
* A patient with a second time grade 1 concussion may return to play contact sports in 2 weeks after being asymptomatic for a week.
* In grade II, the patient may return to contact sports in 1 week.
* A second time grade II may return to play contact sports 1 month after being asymptomatic for a week.
* In grade III, the patient may return to contact sports in 1 month.
* For a patient with a second time grade III concussion, the season is over.
It's important to keep the person awake to monitor their state. If they do fall asleep, the concussion can be more serious and require serious medical attention.
