Immersion is the best way to learn, If you don't want to move to Germany, and have no German friends you can room with, audio courses are the next best thing.
There's a really good site from Radio Deutsche Welle
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,1595,2548,00.html
It's a site with High Quality MP3 recordings and PDF documents of written work to learn the written language. There are several levels from Beginner to Professional. And best of all, it's free.
have fun.

There are several good language programs on cd and audio tape, but nothing beats living with them. Even in college, students are encouraged to sign up for a summer living with a german family after your second semester in the German language program.
And you'd be very surprised to find out how many people in Europe speak english. Living in Germany for a while won't strand you, since you can speak english and get around.
If nothing else, I'm sure you can find chat rooms that use mostly german. That will help.

Personally, I don't think it is a good idea to try to learn a language on your own because I am gregarious and I like being with other people and doing things with them.... I especially like working with a good teacher who can be so helpful....and I like having classmates and a little competition to spur me on, and I like other people's ideas ....you can get so stuffy by yourself. It's lonely by yourself. And you can make mistakes working by yourself. Why do that. There will be time later for learning on your own... for individual work. You will need it .. You do not get everything from classes.
Try to immerse yourself in German culture. Are there German restaurants or grocers near you? Is there a German tourist office; they usually have brochures to study. The inernet is full of fun websites ... recipes for German food in German ... And don't forget that German is spoken in Switzerland and Austria ...
and there is German opera and the German Lieder (art songs), the operetta, their lovely country clothes, the food which is fantastic ...there are online courses offered, a website from ActiLingua that will connect you with living in Austria ... (Austrian German is a little different ... what is your requirement?) ... do you know, I just remembered: there are German jokes online.
I was able to understand only the translated ones since my German is not that idiomatic...and there is a YahooAnswers in
German.... that is so idiomatic (???) i can't even begin to undersstand...as a matter of fact, the English one is a little more than I can take sometimes, too!

language immersion
spend a weekend at the Mohonk house (tower of babble weekend) that is geared to a specific language, in your case German. Lots of fun. The Mohonk house is located in New Paltz, New York.

Go to yahoo/answer German, most of them are very helpful and speak English as well. Maybe find a pen-pal as well there.

Pimsleur Learning Courses are very good. They are all audio, so you can learn them in the car on the way to work/school.

German is one the hardest languages one can learn. Just memorize the words you will use frequently. Like,1. Guten Tag - hello;
2. Danke - thanks;

You need audio tapes, or the pronounciation will be incomprehensible, though it is not as bad as French.
