Bruton Smith shut it down to move the date somewhere else. Bruton Smith is directly resposible for closing down North Wilkesboro, North Carolina Speedway, and Pike's Peak Raceway. Personally, I don't care that the Cup cars don't go to these places, but the Craftsman Trucks or the Busch Series should be at The Rock. There's always Nascar Modifieds, Hooter's Pro Cup cars, or the ARCA series that could run there as well.

It's not technically closed. My family lives a few miles away from it, and I pass by it whenever I go down for a visit. It's still in good shape, they keep it maintained and teams do testing there.
The corporate monkeys of nascar took it's race dates away and gave them to the newer "cookie cutter" tracks in other parts of the country. You know, the races where nothing happens and they play "follow the leader all day" and someone wins it with fuel mileage.
It's a shame, because going to the races there was a blast. The track is hard to drive, but the racing was fierce, and the laps went by fast. Cars could pass high or low and rookies usually struggled. It was a tricky track to set up the cars for too.
Not sure why they won't race busch and trucks there?, people would go to that for sure.

with the growing poplarity of NASCAR and the number of tracks that were built NASCAR had to make a decision, either close some tracks or have the racing season go all year long. The drivers wanted their time off so NASCAR made the decision that if a track could not seat 100,000+ the track would lose its' race.

It really "sucked" when they closed the Rock at least we still have Lowe's. I am from NC recently moved to Texas and I am so disappointed, people in this area ( I am only 150 miles from Ft Worth) are not at all into Nascar. you couldn't find it on the radio, memoriable is HARD to find. But they really Love their Football in Texas.
They did close the rock and add that race elsewhere. They wanted to expand into different territory.

the rock as it was known was sold. the dates that it used to have are now run by texas and phoenix. its a shame that one of the toughest tracks on the "old" nascar circuit is no longer used. that old track was hard as all get out on the tires and the setups that the crews had to put in the car made you good at one end or the other. you couldnt have it great at both ends.
