i got this parakeet from freecycle. the woman told me he was about 8 months old when i got him. so now he's almost a year. i guess i've read about how girls have lighter ceres than boy parakeets. he has a rather orangish-yellow cere

also that girls nibble more and he does. and that boy parakeets are blue and girls are pink...well mine is actually bright pink more in the middle and bright blue on the sides of his belly. the rest of him is brown and with white spots.

is there a way to tell?

I am guessing that you may have to have it dna or feather tested. it costs 20-25 bucks. if you really want to know for sure.

it takes a while to determine. and the yellowish cere isn't always the case. I have owned parakeets the last 10 years and I have one, yellow (looks almost half yellow albino) male/female. I question his gender because he has a pinkish cere and has mated with one my female birds (I've witnessed this) him being the male. But yet his cere is not blue or dark in anyway. It could be that he might be part albino, but I'm not too worried or concerned about his gender. He/she lives in a cage with all males and acts more like a male, rather than a female. He is approximately 3 years old, so time doesnt necessarily tell. As for the nibbling and behavior, each bird is different and has a different personality, girls do tend to have more of an "attitude" but so do males, so didn't judge the gender by behavior

Go to a pet store, and ask them to tell you if it's a male or female. I did that and they told me and I had to buy a male to find my bourke parakeet.
