the Bible says Jesus banished the merchants from the Temple, but in a lot of churches, and most importantly in the Vatican, there are a lot of gift shops, selling souvenirs... Jesus wouldn't be happy with this, would he?

The Church tends have a life of its own, apart from Jesus. And the Church is composed of humans, many whom are greedy and not nice.

Jesus also said "love thy enemies." But the Church has twisted this into meaning "love thy Christian, church-going, heterosexual enemies." In addition, of course, people should "love" little boys, esp. priests.

Boy, talk about taking things out of context! Merchants in the Temple, a place of worship, and having shops on the grounds of the Vatican are two different animals. Remember that Vatican City is a small country, it does not just consist of St Peter's Basillica. There are no places of merchants where worship takes place.

It wasn't merchants Jesus banned from the steps, it was money changers. Sacrifice was practiced at the time and all sacrifices had to be done in the Temple in a manner prescribed in Leviticus. People who lived some distance from Jerusalem sold their little critter locally and then used the money to buy a different one at the Temple for sacrifice. Much easier than transporting animals from one location to the other. I guess the point was that Jesus wanted them to transport their own sacrifices...

Why not? God's temple in Jerusalem was supposed to be the center of true worship. Vatican City has nothing to do with the worship of the true God. It is a showpiece for the Catholic Church where priceless artwork is stored or displayed. They can sell anything they want there and nobody will care.

I think you are comparing apples and oranges.

It would be like setting up a gas station or etrade center IN a church versus a store that sells religous items outside the church.

Simple this is not the humble church that Jesus left. The Catholic Church is a money making business.
