My 7 year old black lab consumed a pair of underwear & socks earlier this week. Since then, she has been throwing up daily & having bad diarrhea. She hasn't had much of an appetitie either. Is there anything I can do on my own without having to take her to the emergency veteranarian? Does this sound normal for dogs to do this?

It's not normal, the clothes are probably unable to move and no doubt your lab in suffering and in pain. Clothes are not digestible and you're going to have to take the dog to the vet. The longer you wait, I'm sure the more hurtful it becomes and further gets lodged in her gut. If you think about it, it's can't be digested so it's not breaking down so it's sitting there whole trying to move through tiny organ parts. The longer you wait, the likelihood it will cost you more money in the end anyway. It's not fair to the dog, please go to emergency services now. Throwing up and diarrhea for a week is way too long of a time span to not be worried, and is a sign of a serious problem. Another way to look at it is if you wait too long, you could be charged with animal cruelty.

There is nowhere for the food to go, think about it. The dogs body is straining to work properly and it can not until the clothes are taken out.

No!!

You should've taken the dog to the emergency clinic the
first day!! They could've gone in an pulled out the clothing.

This dog is now going to die!! because these huge
foreign objects have gone down further into his system.

You must get him there now.
At least they could put him out of his misery.
Do not give him anything else to eat. It will just
get blocked in on top of the clothes!!

What is wrong with you people!!!?????
Why don't you eat a pair of underwear and socks
and see what happens.

Do not give the dog anything else....no milanta...no aspirin...no nothing...None of it will do any good for the problem your dog now has. This is waaaaay past aspirins or milanta!!
get the dog to the vet. Now!!

GET YOUR DOG TO THE ER ASAP!!!!!!!!
No there is nothing you can do at this point. If she had passed them 24 hrs later you wouldn't have an issue. If it has been several days, she isn't eatting and still throwing up your dog is dying and even now you may not be able to save her. The vet will have to preform ER surgery to remove the items, possibly remove dead intestinal tract and any other parts that have died because you didn't want to pay!!!!!
Of course this is normal if you can not pass clothing through your system!!!!

If she is still throwing up and having bad diarrhea for almost a week, you should take her to a vet. Sometimes when dogs eat something they are not supposed to, it can block their bowels. It's dangerous and you should have her looked at by a professional.

You should have contacted your vet the very instant you knew the dog had eaten the clothing! Your dog will probably need surgery to remove the clothing. You have dared to wait a week, are you trying to wait until he dies? I just don't understand. Do you think YOU could digest underwear and socks??? Please love and help your dog immediately.

no, it's not normal! take her to the vet! she might have a bowel obstruction, and could die!
after she is better, please give her to someone who will care for her better. it doesn't sound like you can handle having a pet. labs eat any and everything.
what are you going to do on your own, reach down her throat and pull the things out?! come on!

i don't mean to sound rude, but if my puppy ate something wierd, or bad for him, you'd bet your a** i would take him straight to the vet's, no matter the cost. that's what being a responsible pet owner is about.

Give it mineral oil or vasoline not a bunch but some to see it that will help things move on though the intestines maybe; but will probaly need a Vet. It may also get stuck on the way out and need help getting the material out..

Your dog has an intestinal blockage which is very serious. Without treatment he will DIE! obviously he could not pass the underwear. Take him to the vet right away- he needs immediate treatment and probably emergency sugery. Please take responsabilty for your pets wellfare. I cant stress this enough.

No, it does not sound normal. It can be a number of things that's affecting your poor dog. I think it probably has intestinal blockage from swallowing the clothing which means you will have to take it to the vet or risk the chance of losing them! As for taking care of a sick/recovering dog, keep them in dry, warm, comfortable place (because sick dogs body temp. can drop easily), make sure they have free access to their "toilet" area, it is also extremely important that your dog has a good amount of highly nutritious meals and water if he is to ever recover properly, and please be careful of bedsores. If your dog has restricted movement they can get painful bedsores (usually the elbows) so make sure to put some softening skin cream on them.
