Many people have already referenced the verse in Lev 19. It reads as though it says not to mark yourself for the dead. Some feel it just says not to mark yourself at all. It's up for interpretation really. If you read Romans 14 and Hebrews 9 and on they will explain a lot about the Old Testament though.
There were three types of laws in place in the Old Testament: ceremonial laws, civil laws and moral laws. Jesus talks about how some of these laws no longer apply. The moral laws (like the ten commandments) are the main ones that still apply. Civil laws like what food to eat and tattooing yourself were in place because of proper hygenic reasons. These are not a problem anymore. Read the books I mentioned for more info.
Jesus also says though that if you feel inside that it is wrong then it would be a sin to do it. But if you don't feel convicted about it then it is ok for you even though it might not be for others. So, whether you feel like it is a sin or not it is between you and God. I hope you understand this. Please research the Old Testament laws and what Jesus says about them.

The High Priest of the Levitical Priesthood was not to tattoo. Jesus is our High Priest & is tattooed in His hands, feet, side & forehead.
Also the Mark of the Lord God will be in peoples forehead sealed of God. Satans copy cat of that will be the mark of the Beast / 666. If someone takes the Mark of the Beast or bows to the Beast, that person will suffer Gods wrath.
So, it is best not to get a tattoo, especially if you don't know what it symbolizes (many root in accult or satanism). Some have Christian symbols, like the Christian fish, etc...

Ask yourself this question, do you think Jesus would mark up HIS body with tattoos? Other than the marks he received from his crucifixion.
misskathl's comment is somewhat on target, but now you know.
Ck. out Lev. 19:27-28. And then decide.

I dont think they are, the mention of them in the OT, is about getting them for the dead. The word used for "tattoo" there means "to mark" . Many will say its because the body is the temple, but even Solomons Temple had artful decorations.

Somewhere in Leviticus in the Bible, it specifically states tattoos are wrong. Once you are aware of this, yes, it is a sin. But if you didn't know about what the Bible says, it's not a sin. You have to be aware of wrongdoing in order to sin. ...)(

I would think so. The human body is a temple unto God. For he dwells within you. You are his temple. For you to mar and damage yourself is like smashing windows at a church, Sinful.

IT IS WRITTEN......!
(Lev 19:28) Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
Thanks, RR

I think it depends on the Christian.
I have no right to judge what others do.
