It has been buried in the freezer forever and tonight I'd like to have casserole. I have thawed this meat out 1-2 times before, and put it back in the freezer for some reason (I can't remember). Is there a way I can look at it and see if it's good?

It doesn't smell bad at all and it does not have freezer burn.

As long as there is no freezer burn on it.

Its probably okay as long as you were careful when thawing it out the previous times. If you did your thawing in the fridge (which would keep the meat at 40 degrees F or below), it should be okay. If you thawed in the microwave or on the counter, it is not safe.

Chicken kept for that long may look a little weird and may have some freezer burn. Using it in something like a casserole is a good idea. You can just cut off the parts that don't look good before tossing them in.

I wouldn't go there. I would if it had been in the freezer and stayed frozen without freezer burn - such as the case would be with vacuum sealed products. But thawed and refrozen? Not once but a couple times? Better to be safe than sorry.

First of all: How is it wrapped or packaged? If it's still in the store-bought plastic - throw it away! If it's in Tupperware (namebrand - not just any old plastic) then it's probably still good.

Second: How did you thaw it previously? If it set out on the counter - then throw it away! Microwave or refridgerator, it's probably OK.

Third: How long did it stay thawed before you refroze it? If less than 12 hours & it was refrigerated the whole time - OK. If it wasn't kept cold - get rid of it!

Please tell me this is a joke.

Freezing only slows down the breakdown of the meat texture and growth of contaminating bacteria, it doesn't keep it from happening.

If you've frozen and thawed this several times, it's a year old, and you're planning on eating it, not only will it taste bad, but you'll likely get sick from it. Of course, you could die too, but, oh well, what the heck.

Chicken is tricky...if you've refrozen it more than once.Toss it.If not and its thawed and smells OK to you. Knock yourself out and make your casserole.

How do you know it was good when you put it in the freezer to begin with?

When in doubt, throw it out. A year is a long time and it's not worth your or your family's health.
