AKC.org has a breed selector quiz. It can help narrow down breeds based on lifestyle/wants. Don't forget mutts! When you're ready, check www.petfinder.org to see local purebred and mixes in local rescues and shelters. If you are going to buy from a breeder, please check with your local AKC club, who can recommend reputable breeders, so you do not purchase from a backyard breeder or puppy mill.

Bichons are cute but do require a lot of grooming, Pugs are great but shed a good bit, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are good all around but can be expensive to buy, .....

I would make a list showing what are the most important factors (grooming, shedding, price, etc.) and then research the internet to find a dog for you.

Rescuing a pound puppy is also a good idea but make sure to bring someone along with you to look at the dogs who is very knowledgable about dog breeds because sometimes the people at the pound will tell you that a dog will stay small and it won't. They just want the dogs to get adopted.

My dog is about 35 pounds maybe 30. She's a border collie-aust. shep mix. I was supposed to get a small dog but couldn't help myself to her. She is loving, sweet, protective and herds my kids. She was a rescue from the shelter and I think had been abused. But she follows commands and protects the kids. Very well behaved and not hard to handle at all.
I do know border collie pups and most pups are pretty hyper so we went with a two year old female and she's been perfect, not too big for the bed or couch and loves to cuddle.

I have a 4 month old Bichonpoo (photo at left) she is real cute. She weighs 5 1/2 pounds and will be 10 pounds full grown. She is very smart and easily trainable. She is mellow, gets along with everyone and all other animals. She hardly ever barks. She is a great dog. I would definitely recommend this mix to you.

I will tell you several that aren't toy small, and you can look at them and see if you find one you like.

Boston terrier
Miniature Schnauzer
Rat terrier
Pug

I wouldn't get a daschund or a Chihuaua, one is hard to train and the other is too small and ugly.

I would say a bulldog
they are quiet and you can hardly hear them cry because they aren't complainers and they are very loyal females grow to 40lbs and males to 50lbs I'd opt for a female since the males are more into everything. My puppy is 10 weeks old and she doesn't have accidents in the house and alreadys understands no bulldogs aim to please their owners. Plus they hardly bark!
They can't take long walks they tire out fast with their short legs

Whippets are cool, but be warned most small dogs are very yappy.

Yorkies are cute. Shihtzu are adorable. Any dog will be yappy when its a puppy, train it and it will be quiet.

I have a Jack Russel and a miniature dachshund. They are both amazing. Jack Russel is very protective and the dachshund is very lovable. It all depends what is right for you. In my eyes all dogs are wonderful.
