I reported it to the police and they began investigating. While I was at work, the police found the car but not the keys. They towed the car to the station, then contacted me at work. They said they were going to dust it for prints. When I got home from work I went to the police station and I was informed that no usable prints were found (they were all too smudged). In addition, I would have to pay $65 for the towing service and I would need to get a dealership to make me a new set of keys by tomorrow morning because I couldn't keep my car at the station. I asked about the keys with which the suspect stole the vehicle and they said they can't do anything about them because they didn't find them. It seems that they are not investigating the case any further. So somebody stole my car, kept the keys, and now I have to pay for a towing service and get keys made at a dealership by tomorrow morning, all during my last, and very hectic, week of college classes. What should I do?

don't get me wrong, i'm very grateful that i got the car back. extremely grateful. also, the officer mentioned that i maybe could talk to the chief to work something out as far as paying for the towing service, what do you think are the chances of that happening?

sounds like you should pay the tow bill, get some new keys made, and go to the last week of your classes

Pay the towing bill, get the keys made, be glad the police recovered your car and stop whining. You act like it was the police' fault that they didn't get your keys back. And, by the way, how did someone steal your car AND keys unless you left the keys IN the car. Get over it and get on with your life.

It depends on which state you live in. In Florida there is a victims fund that has money placed into it from restitution from criminal cases. I would look into something like that in your state. Also some insurance policies cover the expenses in cases of of auto theft recovery. As for your case being closed, that is not true. All criminal cases are opened until the situation is resolved. Your case might be in a holding status, meaning closed until further information becomes available. As law enforcement we always want to catch the criminal. It does not mean oh well we have the car and that's it. They might be checking other avenues. If you have questions concerning this, I would notify you local police or sheriffs department's liaison or CID (criminal investigations division for further information on your pending case.

It is typical to pay for the tow. Not unusual there. You need to get the keys made to be able to drive. May as well ask the cost of changing the locks. More than likely the thief will not re-visit your vehicle unless he is a friend of yours or knows your habits real well.

you get the outside door locks changed ( yes you pay for it)

And you don't leave your keys where someone can get them, or in the car to be stolen.

And yes the police have ended thier investigation, and most likely the theft wll not be found

And yes you pay to get it towed.

No offense buddy what would you like THEM to do. It sounds like there are no leads, evidence or witnesses. Unless someone comes out of the woodwork with some sort of information about the theft of you car you are kind of out of luck. Sorry but we are not magicians. Good Luck and be glad you even got the car back.

The only other possible solution to your matter would be to contact your insurance company to see if your policy would cover any damages incurred from theft. I am certain that they do cover any towing fees.

Just a thought that may be helpful to you.

WHEN SOMEONE STEALS A CAR
THE POLICE WILL NOT LIKELY FIND THEM
TRY PUTTING A LOCK ON THE STEERING WHEEEL
