I strongly suggest only making a song list for the must-have songs: first dance and father/daughter or mother/son dances. The dj will have standard songs that will be played for the cake cutting and garter/bouquet tosses, but you could select special songs for these too.
Otherwise, tell the dj to bring all he has, because you want him to play off of requests. Guests love being able to dance to whatever they want to, and they hate being told that they can't listen to those songs because the bride didn't include it on the must-have list (or put it on a must-not play list).

I can tell you what i really HATE to hear at weddings- YMCA< Disco Duck, Macarena, Electric Slide and any of those uber goofy dances. I can truly say those are tacky.
Now i do like some of the more funky music like "Flashlight" from George Clinton, Dogcatcher and such. Disco works... only if you have a funky crowd who likes to boogie.
I am also really into Motown and R & B, as long as there are very few (if any) love songs. Wedding parties should be happy and energetic and your music should reflect that.
Some like country music, some like pop or heavy metal. Just gauge what type of guests you will have and make the list varied and full of different types of music. Cover all age groups from young to old.

Well it's nice to have a good mix, and even the corny songs like the chicken dance and macarena and others have thier place in making it a fun night.
You should consider the guests you have there too and place music that appeals to all ages. I like a nice mix of everything including a few waltzes and polkas if there are older folks who are into that, and of course some oldies, 70s/80s/90s...hot, hot, hot...celebrate...those types of songs too.

People are tired of "CHEESE" at wedding receptions.
Macarena, Y.M.C.A., Chicken Dance, and others are examples of what nearly everyone in the "Big Cities" considers "Cheese". But in some circles, even "Love Shack", "Brick House," and "Celebration" are considered uber cheesey.
Pick out songs that will make your crowd jump, while at the same time choosing dance tunes that will get as many people on the floor as possible.
"Sexyback" (Justin Timberlake)
"Life Is A Highway" (Rascal Flatts)
"You're Beautiful" (James Blunt)
"No Parking On The Dance Floor" (Midnight Star)
"Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" (Michael Jackson)
"Kiss" (Prince)
"Bless The Broken Road" (Rascal Flatts)
"You Shook Me All Night Long" (AC/DC)
Salsa tunes: "Suavemente," "Maria," "Oye Como Va"
"Sweet Home Alabama"
"Play That Funky Music"
"My Humps" (Black Eyed Peas)
"Push It" (Salt N Pepa)
"Superfreak" (Rick James)
"CHAPEL OF LOVE" (dixie cups)

You've got to have a good combo for all ages - stuff for the tweens and teens, the 20somethings, then dip into the 70s and 80s stuff. Don't forget the parents/aunts and uncles/grandparents - there's nothing more beautiful than watching them waltz the proper way, doing the two step, the schottische, polkas, etc.
If you have a specific ethnic background, make sure to have music from your heritage!
