From a Biblical perspective :
Genesis 1:29
Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.
This supports the idea that people were meant to be vegetarians.
Genesis 9:3
Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
This was after the Great Flood, and permission was given for people to eat meat.
I am a Christian, but I am still a vegetarian, even though we were given permission to eat meat.

People didn't eat meat until after the time of the great flood, and likely after Armageddon, we will no longer have the need for doing so, as food will be plentiful on a Paradise Earth. For right now, we are given dominance over the lower animals. We may consume them provided their souls (blood) has been properly drained from them.

*sigh* according to scriptures, animals were made by God for our use,(NOT abusing them or things like that, but to eat and make clothing or something, and people shouldn't kill more than they NEED.) However, i'm a vegetarian, and nobody is going to make me stop no matter how hard they try!(grrr, you'd think that they'd just respect it and say ok by now) If people treated animals like the native americans did i might not be a vegetarian, or at least not as much of one. But i hate the wastfulness and unneccesary brutality that we have now.

Vegetarianism is very good for man.
Some religions do not forbid eating animal flesh because there is still scarcity of food throughout the planet. Man will attain peace, he will grow sufficient vegetable to share to all in a healthy environment.

I do not know of any regarding this, specifically, but
Christians are told okay to eat things as long as you ask blessings. That is why we say a prayer before we eat. In the OT, pork was forbidden. This was changed in the NT when a vision was sent to Peter informing him it was okay as long as it was blessed.
Other religions, I don't know about.

Vegetarianism (making sure the vegetables are carefully washed and there are no insect residue) is inherently Halal and Kosher i believe, so it's an easier way of adhering to the laws

Most Christians eat meat. This happened after the flood. I guess man needed this type of protein in his diet for God to say to do it. Before that, it was plant life only.

They all believe in it, if they follow their scriptures. Torah, Koran, or KJ bible. Jesus specifically told the asceans (sp) to not kill or eat meat.
However, most religions do not profess vegetarianism. Except of course the Hindus.
