My budget is $20 or less. I know he likes coffee. And I think he is pretty athletic - likes to do sports stuff. I'm just at a loss as to what a good office appropriate gift would be. I was thinking maybe a coffee thermos with his name engraved on it?

What about just going to Hallmark or a place like that because they sell different coffee flavors.
Also, just at your local grocer, you can purchase small packages of different flavored coffees. I bet that he would love that. Just an idea. You could get a lot for $20 if you bought the small packages. A coffee thermos would be very nice if you can find one less than $200 that will allow engraving.
That is nice to think of your boss.

Find out what his game is and buy something appropriate. You could do a basket with tennis balls, cute hand towel, shampoo bottles, etc...
