"Mormon" is a common term for people who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) or one of its offshoots. The name comes from the Book of Mormon, one of the LDS scriptures. Mormon was the name of a prophet for whom that book was named.

I am sorry I do not have my Cleon Skousen commentaries on the Book of Mormon with me at work today. But I do recall hearing more than once and reading as well that Joseph Smith once commented that based on what he had learned by studying the Nephite patterns of writing while translating the Book of Mormon, that to him "Mormon" meant "more good." There are already some excellent answers here referring to Mormon, the actual prophet, who compiled the records which make up the Book of Mormon. If you really want an exact quote by Joseph Smith and other scholars, email me and I will look for it for you, or you could probably ask a Seminary or Institute teacher as well.

We are called Mormon after the Book of Mormon, which was so named because the person who compiled most of it was named Mormon. He compiled it through records that were kept over a 600 year period. His compilation was later, approximately 1400 years later, translated into English by Joseph Smith by the gift God gave him. A church was later organized, which Jesus Christ is the head of, but which is governed by a living prophet who has the authority from God to do so. The name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. This is the prefered name. Although many members call ourselves LDS or Latter-day Saints. Here, on YA, most of us say we are Mormon because that's a term non-members are familiar with, and is a lot easier to write than "I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints." or "as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints..."

A member of "The church of jesus christ of latter-day saints". Their founder said an angel gave him a book written down by a man named Mormon. They did not call themselves Mormons at first. Other people called them that because they studied the "Book of Mormon", and the name stuck. They believe that God was once a man, and that good Mormon men will become gods later.

Mormon was a prophet who lived approximately 400 years after Christ. He was the last prophet of the Book of Mormon and compiled many of the writings of other prophets into the scripture which was named after him, which the LDS church uses and which they consider a second testimony of Jesus Christ.
