why can't men perm or roller set their hair like women, if you look back into 16th 17th 18th and even early 19th centuries it was common practice for men to curl their hair

I think girls look better with hair at least that hangs down like a girls should, I dont mind guys haveing longer hair, they can curl it as far as Im concerned, just dont be girlish thats all.

Of course men could do those things, if they want. Back in the 1980's I used to get my hair permed.
Now I'm into the Buzz cut myself.

I has more to do with what is "in style" at the time.

Men can perm their hair, but you have to have some to perm it. Most mens hair is to short to perm. Also, it's not the style for guys right now. And the eras you are referring to, most of the men wore wigs back then.

In the late 70's I knew several men who had perms.
Look at the ancient pictures LOL!
Lots of white guys with Afros, or at least very curly hair.
I only had mine parted in the middle (still do in the winter, then I buzz it off for summer) with the sides feathered or layered back.
Now, about the leisure suits...

Social conditioning. Most people want to be what is considered normal. In those days long curled hair on men was considered normal. Someday maybe it will be again.
