What are the security procedures in place for mail going to Iraq?

No, I mean the actual process the mail goes through once it is sent. I'm interested in the procedures that are used to keep the soldiers safe. My husband has been there for a couple months and it's something that has crossed my mind about what those procedures are. I mean, I would hope they're very thorough as this could easily by a very big achile's heel, ya know?

Military mail will be sent through a battery of inspections. There will be light curtains for letters, as well as detection devices for any kind of chemical residue. Packages will be subject to xray machines, bomb/drug dogs. Anything you send overseas is always subject to opening and being hand inspected. I had several packages from my wife opened when I received them. Nothing was damaged, but they had been obviously gone through.

If the postal situation in Iraq is anything like it was while I was deployed to Saudi Arabia, don't send him porn, he won't get it. In the Royal Kingdom, pornography was considered anything that showed the skin below the neck, above the ankles or above the wrist. Things might be different, but its always possible.

I hope I am answering this right. You are looking for the "can send" and "can't send" postal regulations? If so, I have linked the Post Office's OCONUS restriction page below.

Gotcha - its a system of x-rays, dog sniffing and good ole fashion eyeballing ("Hmmm, that package don't look right"). I have linked their complete program below (2nd link). Be prepared to surf though - there is lots and lots of info and hyperlinks there. Then there are the military screeners once the mail arrives in theater, and then the unit mail clerks.

If the actual process for keeping military mail going to Iraq secure was publlicly known, where would the security be?

If I told you I'd have to kill you, so I'd know you wouldn't pass it on to a terrorist. You can rest assured that it's checked, double checked, and tripple checked.
