They are both the same and the term are now interchangeable. Both refer to a shallow pan with a long handle.
Fry pan the less common term is also a frying pan and a skillet made with cast iron is known as a spider- this was because it used to have legs that enabled it to be held over coal fires.

Depends on how deep it is. Usually, a skillet is more like a frying pan because they're usually intended for shallow frying or surface cooking (pancakes, etc.).
But some skillets are deep enough to fry foods in an inch or more of oil or to boil stuff in water. In that case, they're more like a pot.
