the way they bicker at each other and criticise each other leaves me wondering if perhaps i and the rest of non-christians/moslems are about to get caught up in something that we don't want....a holy war, perhaps....?

Yeah, that thought comes into my mind sometimes & freaks me out too.
I'm glad for pagans and anyother religions that help diversify things a little.
If the world were made up of only Atheists, Christians, and Muslims, we'd really have a problem.

In Islam the world is divided into two parts 'Dar al Islam' and Dar al Harb'.
These are the house of Islam and the house of war. That is, if you are not a muslim then according to Islam you are at war with Islam - whether you think so or not!
This war has in the past taken a very physical form with the Caliphate of the past forcing people to convert on pain of death.
There are some muslims around today who believe the same. For example the 9/11 terrorists had no problem killing people who some would think were completely innocent. In their eyes they were a wartime enemy and a valid target.

Christians also believe the world is divided into 2 - Christians and non-Christians. They also believe there is a battle going on - but it is a spiritual battle for peoples' souls. Christians do not want to kill muslims or anyone else - they want to save them eternally.

There is a way out of this. If you and I can convince these nutcases that their worship of eternal damnation as being some kind of truth is a lie. I mean if you think about it, One God, everywhere, you and I being a part of that God if that is a definition of God, how could anyone separate from that and what good does it do anybody if we have to swear to someone's definition of some infinite terror none of us can prove? They all worship One God, right? Something has to give in their antagonizing unproven definitions of this spiritual terror that they swear allegiance to and are willing to kill over if somebody doesn't agree with them! It is plain out crazy. The Christians will tell you that their Jesus is better because he didn't physically hurt anybody or tell anybody else to, but this guy said that eternal damnation was some sort of truth or so some will say. They are trying to get people to think that what comes around goes around...law of averages and such, and maybe that isnt far off but who can be the judge of what one person has been given for potential and choice on earth verses another. They use their religion to promote their people and shun others who won't swear to their way of thinking... Sure they don't outright kill anybody over it, but what is the difference if you oppress people because they don't agree with you about an unproven concept? And the Muslims are just as bad and so are the Jews. If something can be proven....I say ..I am all for it. Logic rules. I think a God does exist and I think I am part of it. But I fear for those who take it further without explaining how what they say is better really is and can be proven to be. Hocus Pocus if you ask me. And there are many more arguements....like if this guy Jesus was God one in same, then does that make what he did suicide? If God is all knowing, does God make mistakes? And if Sin is difference from God's will and we are all parts of God, then when we do anything even move or think, isn't that a sin, maybe not a grave one at that moment causing instantaneous death, but a sin never the less....a difference from the other parts of God that is unique? I think us trying to heal one another so we can get along with one another is worthwhile. All this other worship of some eternal hell is a lie if you ask me and dysfunctional and mankind is old enough to let themselves see that and move on. Too much science now and coming up to refute that neanderthal beleif system. But God, yeah.....We are, down to the minutest particulate matter and nothingness or image.

I read there is 1.3 billion muslims in the world and a lot of them in the USA. Do I see a holy war between them and the Christians?
It is only a matter of time. Don't remember but someone said there is a million muslims in the USA. They may have a harder time with us than they did doing genocide with the Africans.
In durfer. Everyone says oh don't be that way but how much sympathy did they have for those people over there. Threw their babies alive in the fire. The bible says; What goes around comes around. 25 to 30 thousand children was used as sex slaves. Treated as sub human and chopped off arms and legs.
Have you heard one muslim in the USA speak out against the genocide of Africa or the badness they are doing in fighting in Iraq? that tells me there in agreement.

What I'm worried about is a prospective world war between the western world and muslims. The western world is largely secular and true (faithful, practising) Christians are either a minority or don't hold political power, depending on the country.

I didn't know christians were vying for world domination. Where are their plots being hatched? Because it's really news to me.
Or are you concerned that some of the "funny" answers you get here on Yahoos Answers mean that there is a large Christian plot for world domination?

It's been this way since the beginning of time. I love the passion of this quote...have you ever heard a greater truth??? If only it didn't have to be this way--
What is there to respect in any of this, or in any of the crimes now being committed almost daily around the world in religions dreaded name? How well, with what fatal results; religion erects totems; and how willing we are to kill for them! And when we've done it often enough, the deadening of effect that results makes it easier to do it again. The problem's name is God. --Rushdie

Yes, it sometimes makes me wonder if we are going to experience a world wide "holy war." Considering the weaponry available today, a crusade is a very bad idea.

World domination? Bickering? I haven't had ANY criticism for the Muslim people, though I do have issues with Islam in itself.
