I know that Pike/Muskies aren't in California, but besides their preference for cold water, what causes them to not be able to live in California? What are all the steps you would have to take to maintain a healthy Pike fishery in California?

The Northern Pike (Esox Lucius) was illegally introduced to Lake Davis in California some time prior to 1996, and Fish & Game is currently planning an eradication program.

They CAN live in Northern California lakes... however, they are a NON-native species, and invasive to indigenous species.

Keep them OUT of California's lakes.

they prey species need to be of pike's liking, pike typically feed on tubular fishes, such as perch, suckers, walleye, minnows, but will also feed on ducklings, mice, etc, so if an area was stocked with a favorable prey species, and the water temperature was suitable they could survive. Also limiting the other predators would have a large impact. Other top predators such as largemouth will outcompete pike in warm water ecosystems, but vice versa in cold water ecosystems.
