Any advice on which fields are the most interesting or have the most opportunity?

electrical, mechanical, chemical are all good choices for careers.
But as to what is the most interesting... well- you'll need to decide that for yourself.

Personally- I never figured out what interested me the most and spread my courses out as much as possible, but majored in EE. Then worked as a Systems Engineer which I loved. The jack of all trades- master of none. I loved it becuase I was constantly working with experts in their respective fields and always learning new things- yet got to see the big picture of the projects I was working on.

Electrical and Mechanical are the most versatile. Civil is the steadiest. Chemical and Bio have very bright futures in the next few years vis-a-vis "alternative fuels" (both the making of them and the burning/use of them).

For my money - "computer" engineering is not engineering at all; sorry, just an opinion. You cannot get licensed to practice it, and your options become very limited because of the lack of physical science background that this degree requires. I advise people to avoid it unless they cannot get through a more classical engineering discipline.

Better to be mechanical engineer, who happens to be good with a computer, than to be a computer engineer, who is good with ...?

what would you like to do? You have mechanical which is what some of my friends are going to and I am going in computer engineering because I love to sit down at computers. Or you have electrical engineering which is similar to computer but you can do much more things and far as electrical. So what kind of things do you like to do and that would help you decide.

Chemical is the best, but in reality most disciplines have a lot of similarities ie) Thermo, Heat Xfr, Fluid Mech and Control Systems. No matter what you take you still have to go thru all the gruelling math. But stick it out.
