depends on what r u looking for, really. if u r more into history and beauty, shanghai is really the place. the mixture of old and modern shanghai really is a beauty itself. not 2 mention their new modern development, it really is an interestin city to visit.
but if u r talkin bout food, modern lifestyle, and fast pace life, hong kong will suit u well. while there is still this mix of modern and old lifestyle (even tho only a bit) as well as what we called "east meets west", hong kong is really a very busy exciting city.
as for myself, i like hong kong much better. cheap shop, still lotsa places to visit, but i dont feel like somewhere very different from where i came from.
so back 2 wat u r lookin for, really...

I have been to the 2 and my choice is simple : Hong-Kong. Shanghai, for me isn't a Chinese city anynore, it has lost it's soul and is more and more a western city with building growing like mushroom eveywhere.
But Hong-Kong has kept it's Chinese side even though it is very modern. It is still like the old Chinese movies.
And people there in HK are more educated : they don't spit everywhere, push you to be the first in the bus or subway, they don't drive as if they were a F1 champion. Because in Shanghai it is like this : this city is a bit like a jungle were the biggest and strongest own the weakest.
But after it is up to everyone to like SH or not.

Hong Kong definately. I come from Hong Kong and it is absolutely brilliant. It's modern and beautiful at the same time. Great for shopping and buying the latest technology e.g. ipods, cameras, cellphones you are litterally going to definately going to get a bargain.

I like shanghai.
i went to hongkong, and I feel that, contradicting to what others said, shanghai is much more chinese, much more traditional. most people in hongkong don't speak mandarin, which is the moe normal form of chinese. Also, even though i like shopping in hongkong, i find it much too expensive, and its too much like the shopping in the US. if you want a different experience from the US, shanghai would be the one.
hongkong, cheaper?? definetly not. everything is much more expensive, food included.
also, though this may be a plus to those who dont understand chinese, in hongkong most people speak english, and in shanghai they speak broken english. but it makes the experience in a different country so much more different.

Both cities have their own characteristics, suggest you visit
both if its within your budget of course. For shopping, Hongkong
is preferred.
