I started taking amoxicillin for a sinus infection, and now I have an itchy red rash all over my body. Its little red splotches - not bumps or defined spots... but its all over. I dont know that its the antibiotics, or maybe something I ate - but the college nurse said she THINKS its the amoxicillan. Anybody else had a reaction like this?

I've had that exact reaction to amoxicillan. I went back to the doctor and he gave me some prescription strength benadryl and it all cleared up within 24hrs. Good luck!

Amoxicillin is NOT an acceptable treatment for a sinus infection so either the diagnosis or the treatment is incorrect. That having been said any time you develop a rash while taking an antibiotic the antibiotic MUST be stopped. In the vast majority of cases the rash is not due to a true allergy to the antibiotic but it is not worth the risk. There are blood tests to determine if you are truly allergic to aminopenicillins such as amoxicillin although such testing is actually based upon penicillin itself. In 1980 amoxicillin was not simply the most widely prescribed antibiotic it was the most widely prescribed medication. Resistance to penicillin and its derivatives has reached the point that they are no longer appropriate to treat any infection with very few exceptions. My apologies to your prescribing physician but in matters medical there is no room for the out of date physician as there is precious little room for error. I will admit that if someone insists on taking an antibiotic even though they do not need one I do prescribe amoxicillin as its incidence of side effects is so low.

Be ware of WRONG ADVICE HERE. You don't stop taking an anti-biotic, just for mild allergic reaction. Taking an anti-histamine like benadryl would be the most likely option your doctor will recommend.

Stopping an antibiotic creates resistance to the bacteria you are treating against that group of drugs. Amoxicillin is a Penicillin ypu can't afford to abuse because very few other drugs can treat what penicillins can treat.

If abused, otherwise treatable infection can be fatal to you if they became resistant in your body.

Call your doctor BUT DO NOT STOP FOR HEAVENLY SAKE!

I am telling you this from a medical knowledge point of view

Call your doctor! They shopuld have an emergency number. It sounds like an allergic reaction. The instructions on the pills should say... if you have an allergic reaction, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor immediately. He/she can call in a prescription for a new antibiotic.

that is a common presentation for an allergic reaction. Stop taking the medicine and go see the doctor for another type of antibiotic.

it could be an allergic reaction, and make sure you tell your primary physician and your nurse to list it as one of your medication allergy, and to make sure..that u go to an allergist to find out about food allergies as well, to rule out the food allergy versus amoxicillin allergy.

there are other drugs that they can give you. that do not contain penacillian of any kind. make sure that you let everyone know that before you get treated for anything.
