The Great Potato Famine. The sad thing is while the Irish were starving, Ireland was still exporting wheat to the U.K.

The potato famine caused a lot of Irish to come over because The English Government at the time took huge portions of most any crop that was edible as a tax. They didn't want potatoes, so the Irish Grew them and lived off them. When the Harvest Failed several years in succession, the Irish were Starving (quite literally) and came to America.

Do a Google on the Irish Famine of 1845 when something like three million Irish men, women and children left Ireland when the potatoe harvest failed several years in succession. There were schemes in Ireland whereby the people could do labouring jobs to earn a ticket to England and even US.

I think it had to do with a famine in Ireland (Potato Famine), among other things. I think it was during the mid-late 1800's though, since there were protests about the new immigrants being forced to fight in the Civil War.

The Irish were controlled by England at this time. Not just because England took almost their whole crop of potatoes, but also that the Irish could barely feed their families, and they had no way to fight and conquer England's rule of them. They had no real weapons, to fight back against injustice, played upon them by England. Like, Scotland, they only were able to obtain rocks to fight with. America was a new and prosperous land where they could start a new life, away from control, a land to call their own. For them, it was like what William Wallace said (although he was Scottish), "I WILL NOT BE RULED! OR NOR MY KIN, AS LONG AS I LIVE". These links will help you more in your research. Get an A+ for me!
