They infiltrated the world news which now reports mass death and destruction that never happened. Some of bogus news they got into the media were:
6 Sunnis set on fire in front of Iraqi troops
over 600,000 Iraqi deaths in the last 3 1/2 years
The destruction of four mosques
Reporting the bodies were found when no such reports were issued
Not reporting any good news like the fighting is in the Sunni triangle and the capital, but the rest of Iraq is relatively peaceful (The British in Basra didn't even consider Iraq violent till they went into those areas). Also they aren't reporting of the construction going on and where the Iraqi police and soldiers are doing well. That Bagdad sniper was captured this week and again that wasn't reported. I was reading today's newspaper from what happened at Afganistan schools last year and years before and not this year besides them not having enough teachers and text book (a concern in the United States too). Why? Because the news likes reporting for the enemy.

I don't' think there were any declared objectives other then trying to get an invading force out of their country...

which obviously didn't work... It still looks like we're in for the long haul.
