Not all dogs have tails. I prefer a dog that has no tail.
Australian Shepherds are one of the breeds that may be born with a stubby tail, or a long one, but I like mine with a stubby or a tail that is docked off.
Only one of our dogs is this way, the other three have theres, and getting hit with a tail well.... but they would look funny without there tails and Mr. already had one dog when we got together and the other two were older when we got them and I feel it is cruel to dock tails older then days old (hours old, minutes even).
Sheep have tails too, since Aussies used to work sheep( and other critters now) it was said that the farmers would do the same to there dogs as they would do with the sheep. Now it is just common for this breed....This is just one of the stories why this breed has docked tails or stubbies....

There was no evolutionary advantage to not having tails, and since the precursors had tails, modern dogs do also.

Dogs use their tails to communicate to other dogs (and humans) and for balance when they run.
