You are eligible for aid for you and your child so head over to your local departmrent of human services and find out exactly what assistance you are eligible for. The look at local volunteer centers/churches etc. and expalin your dilemma. There are many toys for tots and gifts for needy families programs this time of year and it's still early so maybe you can get on the list. After you do this, look for a job using the venues the other's listed in this forum. Oh, Catholic Charities may be able to help with financial issues as they have tons of social service programs and you do not have to be Catholic to participate so try them first. Good luck and no matter what keep up a positive attitude for your daughters sake. This is a temporary situation and will turn around in time so do not be discouraged. My prayers are with you....

First off, call the Salvation Army where you live (they're online and in the phone book). They can point you towards services, usually have a food program, and a Christmas toy giveaway for your child.
Next off, time to call your local Social Services office - if you're not on food stamps, you can get on (to make sure you and your child are fed while you're job shopping).
Are you enrolled on unemployment? If not, time to do it.
Jobs -- lots of us have been in this spot, and have had to take that low-paying job to make ends meet. Know that none of this is permanent - just a way to keep you on your feet until you find something better. If you know someone else for whom money is tight, a roommate would make it easier to pay the rent, so if there's someone you would trust around your child (like another mother you know well in a similar spot), it can't hurt to ask. Good luck!

One of the better-paying part-time jobs is as a secretary. It pays more and is somewhat more respectable than working as a waitress or a cashier. Clerical work is very easy to learn, and after a while, it can become pretty fun. Go around to some corporate offices near you and ask if they need an office assistant or a receptionist. Good luck to you.
