It is true. Dogs can smell the hormones our bodies put off. That is how they know when a girl is on her period. They can also smell if you are diabetic. They are very sensitive to the slightest changes in our bodies and they know things before we do. Your dog knows you are pregnant and wants to protect you. He or she will probably be protective of your baby once it is born.

When you're pregnant and your hormones are running rampant, your "scent" changes -- so, yes, dog can sense (through smell) that you are pregnant. The scent of a pregnant -- or especially a lactating -- "animal" like yourself can be very attractive to some dogs.

((In our shelter we use what's called a DAP unit in the common rooms where the dogs are. It give off a scent (that only the dogs can smell) that imitates the smell of the pheromone given off by a lactating mother dog. It helps the dogs feel secure and relaxed.))
