Consult with your health ministry, you will need shots that take several months before you go there. Do not forgoe these, they cover such things as Hepatitis A & B, Malaria, Rabies Preventative Vaccination, Typhoid Fever, and Meningitis along with other diseases that are fatal, and under no circumstances wanted in developed countries when you return... I'm with the others... think this one through before you make the leap, take the necessary health precautions long before you are even pondering the Visa route... otherwise... the Consulate would be a good place to start...
Yellowfever I'm still pretty sure is a requirement, and you may be demanded to show that you have had this vaccination before you're aloud to travel. Some of these vaccinations take multiple shots, or time for body to develop the immunities... do not rush this trip... Also be very cautious of HIV/AIDS... this is a 3rd world country, and it's rampant...

Go on a tourist visa and get out as soon as he starts treating you like chattel. For prolong stays, it is suggested that you front load life insurance (make sure that travel to war zones is covered). Also, a protective vest may come in handy. When you get there, just look for any seasoned Americans or Europeans, and you can get all the weapons you need.
