What are some good arguments against the reinstatement of the military draft?

What is a good alternative/solution to the draft?

If you wrote a letter against the draft to someone who could influence it, who would you write it to (Representative? Senator? President?) and what would you say?

Good argument against: It is not needed, and the all volunteer military meets our needs. Current service members would NOT want to serve with draftees.

Good alternative: Keep the system the same, perhaps increase pay, reenlistment incentives, and benefits for current members and enlistees.

Arguments Against Military Draft

Bobby described most of it fairly well. Additionally, a draft fills the front lines with people who don't want to be there. If there is significant moral or political objection on their part it can lead to a rather short lifespan of the officers of their units. Look up the word "fragging". Rumor had it, and I'm inclined to believe, that the military finally convinced Nixon to give up on Vietnam because the average lifespan of a second lieutenant had dropped to less than 2 weeks. In an unpopular war, a draft can quickly make any leadership other than direct dictatorship impossible. This is not a sustainable situation for a Republic or a Democracy.

Tens of thousands of potential recruits are turned away each year to do budget cuts in the military. Thousands more are not allowed to reenlist for the same reasons. They are making it more and more difficult to join any of the branches. With so many people WANTING to be in the Armed Forces, there is no reason to force people into it.

I don't think we need a draft. We need more military spending on the troops and their families so they can afford to both live and fight for their country. We also need to stop turning away recruits. The AF turned away over 20k last year alone.

Drafted soldiers don't make good soldiers cause a big share of them don't want to be there and so their heart isn't into it making it dangerous for all. They have low morale and lots of awol! The soldiers that want to be there end up being babysitters and the way things are today I wouldn't trust a lot of my own people.

If there was a military draft, it would leave the rest of us defenseless against foreign troops already on U.S. soil who would implement THESE secret and evil plans against ordinary U.S. taxpayers!...

I would write to it congress I guess. I was in the military myself and would say that forcing people to join the service creates bad attitudes and piss poor work ethic. If you don't believe in what you are supposed to be fighting for then how hard are you really gonna work! I would join again voluntarily but its not for everyone!

Well, draftees can probably expect to come home to no job. If they make it home.
Those for the draft should prepare to be drafted to care for the returning parapalegcs. People who want to fight are better at it.
Someone who doesn't want ot be there, doesn't help the active soldiers or themselves.
F*** the draft.

Actually, if the USA went back to the draft crime and welfare would go down to a fraction of what it is today.
