I don't think being in the freezer and then taking it out and putting in the fridge would have harmed it. It would take time to thaw in the fridge anyway. It could have just picked up odors from the refrigerator or freezer. Just cook it and since it is beef and not pork, I feel confident that it will be okay based in my reading knowledge about freezing food. I do know that some things I put in my fridge can send odors up to the freezer part. Yuk. You are okay. Just marinate well and it will taste okay. If the meat has a brown to green tint, don't use. Otherwise, okay.
I would not be worried.

Is the smell a sort of gamey one, like strong lamb or mutton? Could be you just got a roast from a grass fed animal, rather than grain fed. This happened to me last week, I got a prime rib roast from Australia on the cheap, and I found out WHY! It smelled and tasted more of badly butchered buck venison, or strong MUTTON! Phew! It was returned to the store PROMPTLY! Has anyone else had this experience with Australian beef? I hope it's all not that bad! :|

Unless the meat was bad when you put it in, there should not be a problem. Thawing in the fridge is the proper way. The meat should have never been in the danger zone. 40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. When in doubt throw it out, but it's up to you. I probably wouldn't, but I can't smell this particular meat.

I'm siding with 'believer' on this one - I was thinking about a new freezer smell.

i wouldn't chance it, it's not worth worrying about IF it's bad - just think how miserable you'll feel if you get sick from eating it. to me if something smells, that's a bad sign - better to get this warning and tossing the meat, then being sick. think of your health - not whether it's good or bad meat.

its probably just blood you smell I would rinse it and cook it. Beef can be turning colors and still be good. Pork and chicken go bad quick.
