They make an awful lot of money. They can be rude to their staff. They think they are superior to most people and generally miserable gits. Incidentally, this is only what I found whilst working at a Doctors - and would like it to be known, this is just my opinion.

Here's some of what I do:

Talk to patients
Evaluate their medical condition
Consider their upcoming surgery, who is doing it, how long it will last, and how it will impact them
Explain to them what I need to do to keep them comfortable and alive during their surgery
Answer any questions that they or their family members have and reassure them that everything is going to be ok
Have them sign an informed consent paper
Start an iv
Apply blood pressure, ECG and pulse oximeter monitors
Give them enough medication to knock them unconscious but not kill them
Manage their airways, insert breathing tubes, set the ventilator just right to maintain normal to slightly decreased end-tidal carbon dioxide levels
Maintain their unconsciousness with a mixture of drugs and gases
Maintain neuromuscular blockade (paralysis) if it's needed
Sometimes place lines in their arteries, or large veins of the neck
Sometimes give a spinal injection, or an epidural
Monitor their heart rhythm and treat any abnormalities
Monitor their blood pressure and keep it in a normal range
Monitor their heart rate and keep it in a normal range
Monitor their oxygenation and keep it in a normal range
Consider their post-operative analgesic requirements
Write down everything that I do
Communicate with the surgeon to make sure he/she isn't killing my patient
Monitor the blood loss
Manage fluid administration, taking into account blood loss, urine output, evaporative losses and third-spacing of fluids
Plan the timing and administration of my drugs just right so the patient wakes up at the end of surgery but not before
Get the patient breathing again
Take out the breathing tube, but not too early (risk of laryngospasm) or too late (patients hate that)
Transport the patient to the recovery room
Wash my hands
Take a deep breath and do it all again
