Traffic laws are required to be followed by all and enforced by law enforcement. As a law enforcement officer, I am no better than any other citizen. But in certain situations the law must be bypassed for the safety of others. An example is if a burglary is in progress. If law enforcement were to ride up on the scene with lights and siren the suspect could flee the area or even prepare to ambush responding officers. This benifits no one (law enforcement or victim). With that being stated a simply call would not require a law enforcement officer to blow through traffic lights and cause an accident. If I was to observe the reckless conduct of an officer, it would be delt with first speaking directly with that officer or proceeding up the chain of command if the conduct continues.
One last thing, officers do get tickets too. It happens so don't think they are getting one up on anyone else.

They have certain allowances within the laws, such as being able to treat a red light as a give way sign, exceeding the speed limit, driving on the pavement, wrong side of road, down a one way street etc... however, lets not forget that police drivers have to spend a long time training to be able to do this and most have an operator in the front seat who is acting as a second pair of eyes for the driver.

If you were being beaten up by a gang of drug addicts for your wallet, would you rather the police stopped at every red light and waited behind traffic instead of just going down the other side of the road??

The police do a good job, I know it's a bit off the wall, but why not try giving them your support instead of finding fault

Police Officers at least in Illinois have rights under the law to basically disobey the law if it serves the purpose of creating a safer environment for the citizens they serve. Yes, we can run red lights and such, but there is specific language in the laws regarding what I call red light liability. If I run it, and I get in a wreck and its my fault, I am responsible for it. There are privileges as someone already said, but just like with rights there are also a big old set of responsibilities. In general, officers should obey the laws if there is no reason to do otherwise. There are many training requirements that are needed to do his job, and we don't need anyone making us look bad just because they may be able to get away with it.

Put yourself in this position. A person is being beaten. They need help. You are 5 red lights away. You are not authorized an emergency response. Do you wait the extra time and get there when ever or do you get there as quickly as possible knowing that if you cause a collison you may loss your job or be diciplined? Some examples of unauthorized emergency response are someone breaking into a house, a silent robbery alarm, a traffic collision with unknown injuries, ect... When you are in trouble just hope the person coming cares enough to put their life and career on the line for you.

Because being a cop does not change the basic characteristics of the person. You would think that a cop should set a good example, but...on NUMEROUS ocassions I've seen a cop roll through a stop sign or not use his turn signal, and I guarantee that they weren't en route to a call. Sure, it sounds like small things, but you and I get tickets for such offenses.

They can't, unless their is an offical purpose. For instance, they can pass on the shoulder in order to get to an accident. They can go over the speed limit to catch a criminal. They have sirens, and the reason we are expected to simply stop to the right because they can also go thru lights, down one way roads, etc while enforcing the law.

it will be counted on the severity of the site visitors regulation; operating a pink mild will be a severe offense and probable get you and others killed... i'd wish maximum folk would obey such guidelines... a rolling provide up at a provide up signal, reckoning on visibility, probable now unlikely to damage each person... till a cop sees you do it and is having a foul day... I in various of circumstances see some damaged site visitors guidelines on a each day foundation, maximum are minor although... i have damaged some guidelines ie. a rolling provide up or rushing...

Because they get complacent about the laws they are charged with enforcing. I have seen police get tickets only a couple of times.
