I would advise contacting Marina Zacharias. If there is anything that can be done, she would be the one to know. I have asked her permission to post contact info on this forum..She replies quickly to emails, and if you phone, she is in PST zone. Her consults are free> http://www.naturalrearing.com/how_to_contact_us.htm .She has helped me many times over the past 20 years..Marina thinks "outside the box' and is more knowledgeable than anyone I know.

You need to have a frank discussion with your veterinarian about treatment options. Some dogs do very will with subcutaneous fluid administration at home, special diets, medication to keep phosphorus under control, and drugs like Pepcid AC to control stomach acid. If despite an aggressive therapy regimen at home, you do want to pursue kidney transplant... you will need to check with your nearest veterinary school It is much more difficult in dogs than in cats due to the numbers of blood types in dogs. I know the University of Wisconsin has done cats, and the University of California Davis has done both dogs and cats, but beyond that... you'd have to check. Transplants will run you a minimum of $10,000 and the antirejection drugs will be $100's per month (and there is no insurance for this!!)

Sorry to hear about your dog.

I am assuming an pomerainian?? Kidney failure is end stage kidney disease. Kidney transplants are available I do know if it is tried you have to adopt the donor pet, but if your pet is end stage kidney failure he would not be a good canidate for surgery. It is very exprensive plus the receipiant must be on meds to help prevent rejection on the kidney. I am sorry but if his BUN, Crea, Phos and BUN:Crea ratio is very high there isn't much to do except enjoy your last days together

Dogs can live with low kidney function on special diets. I am sure some veterinarian somewhere (call schools of veterinary medicine) are doing kidney transplants---plan on $10,000 minimum.

Dogs can't have kidney transplants unfortunetly.I know how you feel. A year ago I lost my beloved german sheperd alasken malamute mix. I was heart broken. But I got over it . Now I have two cute adorable schnauzer mixes. But nobody will ever replace her.

Dogs who are on a special low protein diet do well. Treatment can include hydration daily or several days a week. Ask your vet if they recommend this, and if they will teach you how to do it yourself.
