The most broad spectrum medicine for ectopic parasites (from my experience) is oral Ivermectin. It is FDA approved for use in farm animals but is used off labelly for the treatment of sarcoptic, demodectic, and notedric mange in dogs and cats. I have not been able to find a site on line that sells it but maybe you could send some one to the vet for you? The thing about Ivermectin is that it is sold in formulations for horses and must be recalculated for the use in small animals. I highly recommend at least discussing this directly with a veterinarian because they would know what dose to give that would be non toxic to your dog. But mites is by far NO reason to have an animal put to sleep because it can easily be managed.

Have you called the vet? Let them know what they gave isn't helping. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the proper medicine. They should be able to help you better than someone on the internet. Your husband's cousin is an ass...you don't put an animal to sleep because it's sick.

I don't know about the medicine but you might try putting some warm olive oil in her ears. It is supposed to smother the mites if you use it for a while. If she doesn't lick it off you can try it on her legs. I used the olive oil on my dog when she had mites in her ears and it did alleviate the itching and it helps lubricate the ear when you clean them out.

What kind of mites? Demodex? Sarcoptes? or ear mites. What is the meds that she is on. If it is generalized demodex that can be very hard to treat as there is a genetic component to that.

You need to know what kind of mites the Vet said? Sarcoptic (mange), Demodex? You can use micodex shampoo, about every 5 days for 2 weeks for Sarcoptic (all bedding jhas to be steam cleaned). Demodex comes & goes.

You want to take a cotton swab and but ear drops on it and clean out the ears and make sure the dog doesn't itch its ears. when you get better take it back to the vet.
