I was watching the show 30 Days about a Christian living in a Islamic society, I listened to the agument of a Islam teacher about how God cannot die. I am trying to understand how it is not a contradiction for Jesus, who was god in flesh and spirit, to actually die in the flesh. I understand that he was resurrected(body and spirit) but it still means he was dead for a period of time. So did God or part of what is God actually die?

Jesus is God and yes he died, physically, not spiritually. On the 3rd day he arose. The Father is God as well as the Holy Spirit but, they never died. Way to mush to explain in a few line here. But it is true.

As the 2nd person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus' divine essence was always alive from eternity, and can never die.

At his conception in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus became a man, complete with a brand new, human soul.

Jesus, who was already truly God, then also became truly man.

At his crucifixion, which Jesus permitted, in order to allow Satan to bring about the destruction of his own evil dominion, Jesus' physical body did indeed die.

His body was separated from his blood, and his human soul was separated from his dead body, as was his divinity.

During the 3 days his body lay dead in the tomb, Jesus' divine essence, along with his human soul, was busy elsewhere, accomplishing a number of things for us.

Once resurrected, Jesus' divinity and his human soul were eternally reunited with his glorified, resurrection body, never to die again.

Forty days hence, Jesus ascended to heaven in that same resurrected flesh.

He is now enthroned there, seated at the right hand of his Father, from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

The whole truth about Jesus had already been well known and duly recorded, hundreds of years before Mohammed ever walked the earth.

Our Muslim friends suffer from late day heresy, largely due to nationalism, that somehow found its' way into both their holy book, as well as their teachings.

Jesus was God in the flesh. He came to earth to redeem lost man back to his Father. He suffered being whipped with cat of nine tails 39 times, he was spit upon, slapped, his hands were nailed to the cross through the wrists, and both feet were nailed together at the base of the cross. Plus his side was pierced through by the spear of one of the Roman Soldiers at the Crucifixion. When that was done, the blood and water the was in the sac of the base of his heart flowed out of his side. There is absolutely no way, that anyone could live through that.

So yes, Jesus died physically died.

The Romans didn't make that kind of mistake. If they killed you, you were definitely dead.
But Jesus is a special case. He has TWO natures, that of God AND that of Man. His physical human nature was indeed put to death. This was necessary in order to provide the Perfect Sacrifice for sin. But like you and the Muslims recognize, God's Nature cannot die. Which was how He was raised again. But the Resurrection was not necessary. It was loving proof that we are now free of the stain of sin, if we but believe in Him.

There are three personalities or entities that make up one God...The Father, The Word (which later manifested Himself into a body or a human container..St.John 1:1), and The Holy Spirit. They all are Spirit's..God is a Spirit and no one has seen or can see a spirit, so when you worship Him, He must be worshipped in Spirit and in Truth. They all have their own role and they work together in unison to complete the will of The Father.

For God to bring His Spirit to planet earth to lay down His Life for mankind, He had to put Himself into a human body just like our body. Otherwise The Word, or that part of The Trinity of God could not be seen or touched or understood by us. The Bible declares that Jesus(The Word) was tempted just as we all have been tempted. He suffered pain at the cross and He had emotions and feelings such as you, or I, or anyother human.

You see, The Lord was able to manifest or to place Himself to be seen, experienced, touched, and witnessed by His Supernatural ability into a human body. So great to be so big as the Creator of all the heavens and the earth and all that is within them, yet able to be small enough to be contained into a body and even contained in our hearts. He is a very awesome God!

He laid down His life for us and He who knew no sin became sin for you and I. The Father turned His head upon the ugly sin of the world which was upon Jesus because God does not associate Himself with sin...and so Jesus cried out..My God, why hast thou forsaken me? He suffered our loneliness and heartbreak too. He suffered all the pains and agony's associated with the torture and the absolute murder of His human body. He asked the Lord to forgive them (this includes all the religions of the world who deny Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and forgive us because it was "US" or the sin of all mankind that murdered Jesus! He really was publicly tortured and murdered for you and I.

Now His Spirit (which is The Word) did not die. His physical body suffered death. But His Spirit went to the inner parts of hell and to all the forefathers before Him such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the other Patriarch's who lived good lives before The Lord were awaiting the prophesied Messiah to come to them In Paradise(remember the story the rich ruler and of Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham, there was a great gulf between them?). He went there and preached to them of Himself so that they could believe on Him, and He led them out as of a great train from there. He defeated the devil and took back the keys to death, hell, and the grave and He made a great show of the devil for all to see.

God's Spirit never did die and never will...just the physical body of Jesus died. I hope this helps. PEACE!!!

Jesus is the Son of God, when he was one on earth, His Father is in heaven as Jesus was praying to him and remember the heavens opened and the holy spirit in a form of dove came down to Jesus during his baptism. God even said 'This is my beloved Son whom I am pleased...'

Clearly, Jesus and God are two different persons as it could be very confusing how if they are one could God talk from heaven when his body is on earth?

Jesus' godly form was not included in his life as a man.

2 Philippians 2:5 Keep this mental attitude in YOU that was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although he was existing in God’s form, gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God. 7 No, but he emptied himself and took a slave’s form and came to be in the likeness of men. 8 More than that, when he found himself in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient as far as death, yes, death on a torture stake. 9 For this very reason also God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every [other] name, 10 so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground, 11 and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Although Jesus was with God in heaven he chose to become a man to pay for for our sins, to pay for his blood and bring back the perfect life that Adam lost.

Jesus did not equal himself to God, because he is God's obedient son, not a part or however you explain it in the trinity.

God raised Jesus from the dead as the dead can do nothing at all.

Those of us who believe in Jesus, understand that this body is only a tent that we inhabit for a short time, our real home is with Jesus when this tent has expired.

The correct phrase would be God died on the Cross, but Christ of two natures only lost his human nature. God is forever without end.
